Trekking in Nepal

Trekking, a number one tourism product of Nepal is one of the unique tourism product of the world that has evolved in Nepal and in course of time has succeeded to establish its own craze and images. Tourists get maximum satisfaction from this product with a feeling that they got the return of what they have paid! Trekking course can be conducted in various parts of the country with a varied number of days. The approach route and the return course for same trekking destination can be made different as per the need of the clients. Trekking is organized in two ways:-

Camping Trek: At a time when there were no lodge and teahouse facilities along the trekking trail trek organizers had no other means but to organize the trekking in camping style. Though, these days good facilities have been developed in some popular destinations like Annapurna, Manang, Kaligandaki, Langtang and Everest, trekkers still show their concern for the camping trek even in those areas. The trekking caravan comprising the trekking group and the camp staffs and porters carrying the load of food stuffs and the equipment exchange few words of formalities on the first day of trek course. Day after day when the time comes to depart the whole group is converted in one family! During the course they know each other, they know the life style and culture of each other and finally are dipped into affection! Camping trek generates more employment opportunities to the hilly people who have no other good means to support their hand to mouth problem.

Lodge Trek: This trek is known these days by "tea house trek" also. This can be organized only in those areas where adequate lodge facilities are developed. Such areas are in Kaligandaki region, Manang area, Annapurna Sanctuary area, Langtang and Everest area.

Season:

The most suitable seasons for trekking are spring and fall. In spring from March to May (pre-monsoon) the days grow longer and temperatures rise; flowers bloom and all turns green a spring like feeling pervades. In April rhododendrons begin to bloom; in the greenery of May there is much haze but from the middle of the month rain showers, precursor to the monsoon, increase.

From October to November (post-monsoon) the weather is stable, making this the best season for trekking. Even at 5000m passes there is little snow; the passes are easy to cross during calm conditions. In November, the weather becomes colder and winds grow stronger. In winter from December to February, weather is generally settled. But the days are shorter as the cold increases and it is difficult to cross passes of over 5000m due to strong winds. Occasional bad weather due to atmospheric lows can bring snowfall. And when the snow does not melt due to low temperatures, this can hinder flights to Lukla or Jomsom. Generally in the mountain a mist develops in the afternoon, making clear weather at nightfall rare. This is due to great temperature variations. In Monsoon season the tourist can have the choice to visit the rain shadow area like Mustang and Manang.[source: Trekking in Nepal by Toru Nakaru]
